How to catch the day….
We all have dream projects. Something that you’ve wanted to work on forever but can’t get to because the hours, days, weeks, months, years slip away. Maybe it is a book project, maybe it is a new innovative product, maybe it is simply spending quality time with your team…but regardless, day after day, week after week, it doesn’t happen due to the minutes, hours and days …running out before you can dive in. If only you had a magic net with which to simply capture those needed and wanted blocks of time. Well, you do. And you create it by…

Authentic Collaboration
Collaboration. It is one of those words that is being tossed around quit a bit in business and in the nonprofit world. We are opening up to the idea of collaboration as we realize the problems we are trying to solve, are more complex than ever before. And finding solutions, as well as continuing to innovate, requires the coming together of diverse minds and sharing skills, talents and resources (financial and human). Many leaders are seeking employees who are “collaborators”, but where does one learn that skill? I hear many people say, “Oh, I worked on a team project. I…

Change. Where does it begin?
There is only one place where meaningful, relevant and sustainable change can begin. And that is deep inside each one of us. Our nature is to spend time looking outside of ourselves for change. Waiting for the solution to be declared so we can start “working on it”. Many words have been written on this topic and my adding to them really doesn’t make much impact. But if you take 3 minutes to watch this video, you will get the message. Hopefully, as has happened for me, you will feel yourself release a breath and make the understanding your own.…

Ah Ha! The understanding becomes your own!
I’ve been working in experiential education for years. This field values the “Ah Ha” moment. We talk about it. We identify it when it happens. We create activities and hold space for our participants to experience it. But I’ve never really heard the “Ah Ha” moment defined or a context for what actually happens. Today I was listening to an interview with a horseman who was talking about how when horses make connections, either in training or with herd communication, they exhale. It is a release. In his mind, this release of breath means, “ah I understand and I have…

Inspired Selling
I took a risk yesterday. But it felt like the right thing to do. I was asked to do a presentation for one of the organizations I consult with. The topic was my approach to business development and sales. This is heart based organization. They were built on heart. Their leader’s favorite statement regarding working with people is “no matter what else you do, give them your heart”. I considered a traditional business development presentation with sales theory and strategy because I imagined that was what they were expecting. But then I remembered some great words of advice from my…

State of Ease
I’ve been reading and listening to teleconferences on “Ease” and the state of ease. Some may associate it with “things coming easily”. I don’t because I still believe it takes intention and effort. But, in my own words, I would describe a state of ease as a way of being when when you are able to: *release fixation on outcomes, *release self-defeating chatter, *practice being in the present moment, *express and really feel joy and gratitude, *clarify and express your intentions, *live as if they are already happening, and most importantly, stop working to manifest things, but instead fall in…

Stop, Drop and Roll
I am often asked to provide coaching for an employee or business owners who are feeling stuck, overwhelmed and unmotivated in their work. I refer to this common syndrome as “in the weeds”, a phrase from my days as a waitress slinging heaping plates of seafood and onion rings at a restaurant with an endless line of tourists in Rockport, MA. A waitress (yes, that’s what we were called back in the day) was “in the weeds” when the kitchen was yelling your name to pick up orders, you just got two new parties seated, another party was waving for…

Unimaginable Outcomes
Yesterday I took a walk through an amazingly beautiful pasture filled with mama mares and their tiny, shaky-legged foals. The herd was not only close to the trail, but some were standing in it I walked around the pairs making certain to give space and keep my eyes soft and non predatory. As I got to the other side of the herd, I paused to just breathe and take in the amazing scene. A man and woman came along and we all stood in wordlessness. After a few moments the woman whispered “Oh my gosh. Behind you!” And I felt…

Regrets
I’ve been reflecting on my decision to move to California nearly 8 years ago. My questioning has been ignited by the fact that my daughter Annie is planning her wedding. And she is across the country in Massachusetts. She is the first of my two amazing daughters to marry. I feel somewhat isolated from nuances of the day today planning process by my physical distance. Emotionally and spiritually (and cell phone and email) I am connected minute by minute. My point today however is that I began thinking “I wish I hadn’t moved away.” What would it be like if…
