I Just Did Something I Almost Never Do
I just did something I almost never do. I stopped working and went for an impromptu walk with a friend around my neighborhood.
Why? Because what I know about myself is that when I’m feeling overwhelmed, uncertain, or a little anxious, nothing sets me back to balance like fresh air, moving my body, sunshine, and a different perspective. All of which a 40-minute walk with a friend provides for me.
I have other strategies I use as well.
In fact, I have a go-to list that I developed during a particularly rocky time in my life back in 2010.
This list still serves me today for those times when my brain is too overwhelmed to make great decisions or see the forest for the trees. My tendency is to dig deeper and work harder. Fight my way through the haze and stress. But, what I know is that in those moments, the best course of action is to pick up my list, identify one thing on this list and take action - even if only for 10-15 min.
Here’s my list:
Go for a walk or move my body
Play with puppies or horses
Meditate
Write in my journal
Get in water (swim, shower, a bath)
Connect with family and friends
Give a hug
Create art
Eat something healthy and delicious
Sleep
Express gratitude
I know that at anytime I can just slide my finger down the list and wherever it lands, depending on my location and the day, I can pause and shift my energy, my perspective, and bring myself back into balance.
If you feel inspired to do so, take 5 minutes and create your list.
It doesn’t have to be fancy or sophisticated. Whatever first pops into your head when you ask yourself this question, “What simple and easily accessible activities bring me closer to feeling joy and peace?”
I’d love if you’d share your list with me (just hit reply on this email!).
But most of all, I’d love it if you would take a few minutes every day to regulate your emotions and bring you back to balance — because the world needs each of us to do all we can to be responsible for the energy we bring to each moment. You matter! And your presence matters.
If you are seeking ways to help yourself and your team find more peace, balance, and joy, let’s talk. Investing in this way pays dividends for any organization. Set up a time to chat here.
